Hough Memorial Cancer Society (pronounced "Huff") is a local registered Society Founded in 1972. Our sole purpose is raising funds to purchase Cancer detection Equipment for the Cariboo Memorial Hospital. Until a cure for cancer is found, Early Detection is the best opportunity for successful treatment. Our objective is to provide the latest equipment for early detection locally, saving the trauma, time and expense of travel.

2012 is our 40th year of continued operation. Our new venture is raising funds in conjunction with the Hospital Trust for a much needed Digital Mammography Unit. There are only three of these in British Columbia. The existing Analog mammography unit is outdated and it is difficult to get parts for this older equipment. The new digital technology is able to detect very small indications of cancer which could be missed by the existing analog unit. It will require the whole Community and surrounding area to be involved to raise the approximate $700,000.00 required. The Williams Lake Hospital services an area of approximately 50,000 people. An average year will have 2500 to 2700 ladies use this Cancer detection unit. We want it to be the latest technology!

It is important to note that we will still attempt to continue updating the existing equipment required for Cancer detection while helping to raise the approximate $700,000.00 for the digital Mammography unit.

Hough Memorial is not affiliated with or part of any other Cancer agency, nor do we receive funds from any other Cancer organization. We are unique in that we are all volunteers, no paid employees and every dollar donated stays in Williams Lake for the purchase of cancer detection equipment for the benefit of our local citizens. To date we have been involved in the purchase of equipment of close to three million dollars.

It is exciting for us to note that Doctors are able to use this equipment for the detection of many other procedures, operations and diseases.

Much of our funding throughout the year is donated by local Service Clubs, Business, Industry, Service Clubs and concerned citizens in Memory of a loved one, friends or just donating to our very worthy cause. Hough Memorial Society sends a card to the family of the bereaved, in your name advising that a donation has been made.

Our annual fund raiser is 'The Parade of Choirs', with choirs from the Cariboo area participating. Each year the building is filled to capacity.

We urge you to be an important part of Early Cancer Detection and that you consider us on your annual list of recipients for donations. Income tax receipts will be issued on request.

Your donation could help to save a life of someone close to you.
